When starting to learn te reo, continue learning te reo, or drive the learning of te reo for a group of people, whether it be in your whare with your whānau or in your workplace with hoa mahi, it’s worth making a plan - whakamahere reo.

  • Why am I doing this?
  • What is motivating me?

  • Who is involved?
  • Who am I learning with?
  • Who is guiding me?
  • Who am I teaching?
  • When am I learning?

  • How much time do I have to commit to learning?
  • What resources am I using to help me in my learning?
  • What kind of learner am I?
  • How do I like to learn?
  • Audio - audiobooks, podcasts, waiata, reo irirangi Māori
  • Visual - Whakaata Māori ondemand, YouTube channels, flashcards, apps
  • Textbooks, books, e-books
  • Practice speaking with others and yourself

  • Base your learning around activities you and your group do and/or places you and your group frequent.
  • Activity - Eating dinner
  • Preparation - collect and learn vocab and sentences relating to that activity, make sure they are visible and easy to read and follow. Move onto breakfast the next week.
  • Location - living room
